Rising Average Temperatures

  • Establish a high-temperature work safety policy to ensure employees do not work long in high temperatures and recommend appropriate work-rest intervals.
  • Adjust work schedules to avoid strenuous activities during heat waves.
  • Replace air conditioners in venues with split-type energy-saving models and use area partitions and curtains to improve energy efficiency and cooling effects.
  • Provide sufficient drinking water and temperature reduction facilities, such as water dispensers and cooling towels.
  • Arrange for medical personnel and standby ambulances for outdoor activities.

Drought (Water Shortage)

  • Encourage employees to conserve water resources by limiting irrigation time, using water-saving devices (such as water-saving gaskets), and promoting water-saving measures.
  • Stockpile drinking water, buckets, spraying equipment, and other drought response resources.
  • Maintain close contact with local governments and communities to understand local water resources and drought warnings.

Increased Frequency of Extreme Weather Events - Typhoons, Heavy Rain

  • Establish the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations and the Guidelines for Suspending Work During Natural Disasters.
  • Create an emergency plan, including stockpiling sufficient waterproof materials, defining evacuation procedures, maintaining emergency contact information, and keeping supplies on hand.
  • Monitor weather forecasts and typhoon warnings, notify Tzu Chi employees and volunteers within the affected area, and follow local government announcements to cancel relevant activities or switch to online formats to ensure volunteer safety.
  • Regularly replenish waterproof layers, purchase pumping equipment, and install floodgates in underground parking lots to keep the clubhouse drainage system clear and enhance building waterproofing capabilities.
  • Before a typhoon, inspect and maintain floodgates in all clubhouses, ensure hurricane shutters and windows are securely closed in the park and off-campus dormitories, and verify that roof drainage holes are unobstructed.
  • After a disaster, thoroughly assess the situation in the affected area, use drones for surveillance, and safely deploy volunteers for disaster relief.

Increased Negative Feedback from Stakeholders

  • Prioritize the selection of suppliers that align with Tzu Chi’s environmental principles and encourage suppliers to sign a commitment letter to human rights and environmental sustainability clauses.
  • Implement green procurement by selecting products with eco-labels, water-saving labels, energy-saving labels, Energy Star, and energy efficiency levels to procure information, electrical appliances, and transportation equipment.
  • When selecting construction and mechanical and electrical contractors, prioritize contractors with lower environmental impact (such as those that use low-carbon construction methods, local materials, and energy-efficient large machinery).
  • When cooperating with external organizations, advocate for promoting vegetarian food and using environmentally friendly tableware to reduce waste and carbon emissions.

Sea Level Rise

  • Using the 3D Disaster Potential Map provided by the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR), we can analyze the potential risks of soil liquefaction and flooding for important branch offices and Jing Si Halls. This helps us understand the existing facilities’ resilience to rising sea levels.
  • Considering the impact on land use and configuration at each location, avoiding placing branch offices or Jing Si Halls in high-risk areas is essential.

Climate Change-Related Litigation Risks

  • To understand the impacts of climate change on us, in 2023 we assessed the climate-related risk impacts on our organization’s services, operations, and finances by examining the upstream, midstream, and downstream aspects of our service value chain. We referred to risk lists from domestic and international non-profit organizations, NGOs, and businesses. Based on seven major services, we summarized the potential impacts, vulnerabilities, and timelines for five transformation risks and four physical risks. The five major risks identified for priority management are: "Rising Average Temperatures," "Increased Frequency of Extreme Weather Events - Drought (Water Shortage)," "Increased frequency of extreme weather events - typhoons, heavy rain," "Increased negative feedback from stakeholders," and "Sea Level Rise."
